Hello,

We are Erik and Sandra Keurentjes, we have two lovely daughters Nienke and Anna. We live in Hoogkarspel, a small town about 40 Km to the north of Amsterdam.

Our love for the Frenchies started in the early nineties.

We really wanted a dog, that was for sure. Our first choise was a English bulldog, but when Erik went to a dogshow in Leeuwarden with friends (I had a nightshift), and he saw the Frenchies, he fell in love immediately.

He spoke to a bulldogbreeder who lives a few kilometers from our home and made a appointment to visit them.

Within a few weeks we went to the breeder and there I saw for the first time in my live the French bulldogs and I also fell in love with this breed.  Then I knew we want a French bulldog, but we still worked fulltime so we had to wait a few years.

After five years we made the decision and we got our first bull Fredéric de la Champêtre, a very chic name for such a small puppy. At home we call him Freek, after my grandfather.

You know, when you have one, you want more, and so in 1999 our second bull was born.
Her name was Dame Gertrude of little Bombardier, we call her Guurtje. A very lovely dog and she also likes to go to the dogshow. So Guurt and I went to several shows, with excellent results.

Slowly we were infected with the “dogbreedvirus”, and we want to have a dog with our own name. In 2001 we were officially registered  with the kennelname v. ‘t Spikkertje.

The story behind this kennelname is as follows.

Freek, our first bull is renamed after my grandfather.

In our village  a lot of people had the same family name, so to know about which family you spoke they had all nicknames. My grandfather was a carpenter, and he was called Spikker, in english it means spiker. His son (my father)  was also called Spikker, I was the youngest at home so I was Spikkertje (small spiker).

So that is the story behind our kennelname v. ‘t Spikkertje.

Allright, Freek and Guurtje liked each other very much, and you know what can happen than.

The first of october 2003 we got a litter, and so the first dogs with the kennelname v. ‘t Spikkertje. Of course we kept one female puppy, her name  was Dame Sophia v. ‘t Spikkertje.

After two years we bought a new dog, Dame Louise Des Petits Coquinnes, which has very good qualities in her bloodline which (we think) match very well with our bloodline.

In 2005 Sophie got a litter, and from that litter we kept our youngest dog, Dame Juliette v. ‘t Spikkertje. We went to a dogshow with her and she likes it very much.

So as you can read our hobby takes more and more time, with ups and downs, but still more love and respect for this wonderful dog

THE FRENCH BULLDOG.

Best regards, Sandra Keurentjes
